monster versus kirby

The first 140 pages of the future Pixelton graphic novel are 100% inked. It took longer then I imagined, but I’m happy. It looks and reads well, and once I add some extra shine to the gaps I think the first section does exactly what it needs to. For once in my life I have something I’m proud to stand behind.

And of course now that I’m getting somewhere, I’m entirely changing how I do things. The rest of the book will be roughly written/sketched on paper but drawn from the start in the computer. I feel I used my sketches as a crutch and with less emphasis on copying I can make faster pages. This is the same method I’ve used with the online comic, and I finally think it is looking good enough to bring to the book.

After replaying ICO I’m dedicated to building more atmosphere. If I have the time you will get to explore many parts of the enchanted island, even if just to enjoy the view. Having a sense of place and weight is a big push that I feel worked in Nothing Left to Lose, even if the story was crap. I’d like the same gravity but with a child’s sense of wonder.

If I get my way I’m half done. So much more to do, but to be honest, this end section goes insane. When I started this book I never imagined it would end up being such a strange and heavy project… :D

GOOD NEWS/ BAD NEWS:
I finished two pages today but the first won’t get colored until tomorrow or Tuesday. This next page is nice but the second page could be one of my best drawings ever. It was the reason (outside of the book) that I stopped drawing here, because each time I realized what I was doing my mind became lazy. But both should hit within a week!

HELP ME PLAY A PRANK ON THE KITTEN PEOPLE:
So when you type kittens into Google the first image you get is Pixelton’s image of a kitty sniper. And this isn’t Google Images…just regular old google search. And while I enjoy the thousand people a day coming here for fuzzy cat love, I wonder if Google would notice if I say, swapped this image for another the same size and name?

Wouldn’t it be funny if they searched kittens and got an image of Hitler in a monster truck? I need your genius to make this prank fully epic. Please share any ideas/images in the comments. :)

    I can’t wait to see the book. It sounds amazing and epic in every way. Plus, I’m going to go out on a limb and say that most of us will easily take RSS silence if it means the book is progressing, so no apologies needed going forward either!

    What if the kitten link was some strange fantasy style image of somebody old school like einstein, lincoln or ben franklin riding a giant kitten that had a saddle with lasers mounted to it. Oooh, and fighting some army of giant ants or something. Basically, anything to have accidental visitors say “WTF is that????”

    You have no idea how excited I am to hear the book is progressing, Josh! When it comes out I’m going to be in bookstores saying “See that? I KNOW that guy. …well, kind of. I mean, we talk online sometimes. I mean, I’ve left comments on his site. I mean…” and then run away with my copy of the book.

    Also, on the subject of the kitten link, what if instead it had nothing to do with a kitten? The first image result could be, I don’t know, the Hamburglar or something? I like Cat Daddy’s idea, but without any kittens or cats at all, just for that extra bit of weirdness.

    I was almost going to post an excited comic congratulating you on the book, until I realized you would be asking for moneys in return for the book. So before I begin dancing like a monkey-fool, how much are these novels gonna set me back?

    Now, for the picture - I like the idea of something not even related to kittens, but maybe, if you’re feeling real evil, perhaps a couple of pics of kittens being tortured or such. Now, if you don’t want to be bombarded by hate-mail, I’d go for some shameless plugs. Ooh, or a combination! A pic of Kirby and Fil beating a kitten senseless! YES! Genius!

    How about this? You know, because kitten rimes with mitten, and they’re made from wool, which is also used to make the… Thing in the picture.

    In any case, it’s great to hear that the comic is coming along nicely. Keep up the good work, Josh!

    Cat Daddy: Ha! Love the name, and thanks for the kind words Daddio. We’re are definitely in agreement on a high WTF-factor.

    Harlequin: Thanks sir! I’ll probably do the same with the book. “I know that guy…”. Then run into a corner and start crying now that I’ve juiced my creativity into paper form. But your Hamburglar idea is sheer insane brilliance. It shall be done.

    Wasd: Unfortunately no clue yet on a price. To be honest though, I learned a valuable lesson with my last big one. I made it amazingly cheap ($5 bucks for 216 pages), but it didn’t impact sales. So the truth is I’ll charge enough to make sure I’m covered, Since this is color, and giant, it most likely won’t be to cheap. :(

    But the kitten punching idea is perfect to rile them up. Maybe I can start with this image to stun them, and move into a Hamburglar to finish them off? :)

    Cap’n: That Mitten child will now haunt my dreams and possibly the corners of my eyes for the rest of my life. So in other words, amazing work!
