Free Indie Game to Break your Hearts - Passage

UPDATE Jan 25, 2008: In an odd twist of fate, this post was featured in the Wall Street Journal. I’m very happy to see Passage get the press it deserves. :)

If you’re new here - welcome! I make a fun little web comic about a town of retired 8-bit heroes. See more here! And on occasion I write about indie games, thoughts on creativity/writing, and a new “choose your own adventure” style graphic novel I have in the works for next year. Thanks so much for stopping by!

(Oh, and if like what you see please subscribe. I don’t have ads here and knowing people might be interested in what I’m creating really keeps me going. Thanks!)

I’ll be a man and admit this game made me cry when explaining it to my wife. For you see the game is about…oh wait. You haven’t played it yet have you? Well, then I won’t spoil it but for one piece of advice:
Life is what you make it.

Download it here!

And we haven’t done the “share the search results people visit Pixelton from and find another excuse to add in these keywords to a post” game in a bit. It is quite a game.

After playing, I recommend reading the creators notes. It made me want to play a few more times. Very cool concept, if a little depressing.

Well, I didn’t have to play it in order to cry. I just looked at the system requirements. Because I’m still on Win98. What can I say, my ship’s an old one. Cap’ns don’t cry!

Yeah, forgot to say how I found this place. It was by accident - through Giant In the Playground forums.

Okay, that was rough. At first I was a little frustrated because there didn’t seem to be a goal or anything, or treasure to find, and then I realized treasure wasn’t the point. It was to get where I was going. And then, when I had to go on alone…

Well, it doesn’t take much to get me to cry anyway.

Thanks for the reminder Felonious! The creators notes make the game after you play it. I almost emailed the guy after stalking him.

My first time through I collected treasure and explored the maze without looking. When I realized that the treasure meant nothing and my death was imminent I began to ran towards the end hoping for anything to save me.

On second play through I found a wife. We moved slower through the scenery, more straight, and I noticed we both couldn’t fit through to explore. But she was mine. When she died I just stared at the gravestone and walked around it back and forth hoping to die.

Well, I didn’t have to play it in order to cry. I just looked at the system requirements. Because I’m still on Win98. What can I say, my ship’s an old one. Cap’ns don’t cry!

That game left me feeling very confused. On my first run through I found the girl and then got stuck trying to move through the “maze”. The narrow vision and fairly featureless landscape mocked my instincts of 2D gaming.

The second time I played it again to try to reach the “end” by walking with the girl to the right. I knew fairly early on that after the first few scene changes there wasn’t going to be an end, but I kept going anyway in the hope that there might be something to see at the end of it all.
